It’s time to change the game.
The country that gave the world football has since delivered a painful pattern of loss. Why can’t England’s men win at their own game? The team has the worst track record for penalties in the world, and manager Gareth Southgate knows he needs to open his mind and face up to the years of hurt to take team and country back to the promised land.
Joseph Fiennes’ portrayal of Gareth Southgate is ‘pitch-perfect’ (Time Out) in this ‘thrilling’ (Sunday Times) new play by James Graham, with set design by Es Devlin. Graham reunites with director Rupert Goold, following their acclaimed productions of Tammy Faye and Ink, in this gripping ‘new stage epic’ (Telegraph) about both nation and game.

Very good - can be enjoyed even if you’re not into football. Very long (show started at 7pm & didn’t finish until 10pm) and slightly too deep for me in the middle, I went from being very upbeat & engrossed to sleepy very quickly after the interval. Thought the ‘fear’ therapy could have been a shorter scene.

I bought these tickets as a birthday present for my husband and probably enjoyed it more than him. Seats second row of the stalls where we had a perfect view of the amazing Joseph Fiennes who was the absolute embodiment of Gareth Southgate. It really does make you realise what a fine actor he is and what good acting is all about. I was completely blown away. Can’t recommend this enough and you don’t need to a football fan, I’m not particularly.
